The Art of Enfleurage: Ancient Fragrance Extraction
One of our most treasured techniques is enfleurage — an ancient French method of extracting fragrance from delicate flowers that cannot withstand the heat of steam distillation. In this process, petals are laid on a layer of fat which slowly absorbs their scent over hours or days. The fat becomes what is known as a pomade, rich with the living fragrance of the flower. The result is a pure, complex scent that no synthetic fragrance can replicate.
This method was widely used in Grasse, France — the perfume capital of the world — before the industrialisation of fragrance made it commercially unviable.
