Three handmade artyarn scarves by Arnia CraftyGirl — peach lilac wrap, burgundy tassled scarf, and bohemian fringed shawl — arranged on linen with lavender and a soft towel for a scarf care guide

How to Care for Your Artyarn Scarf and Keep It Beautiful

An artyarn scarf is more than an accessory — it’s a piece of wearable art. Crafted from textured natural fibres including wool, silk, and plant-based yarns, each Arnia CraftyGirl scarf is handmade with care and designed to last for years. But like all natural fibre pieces, artyarn scarves need a little love to stay looking their best.

Here’s everything you need to know to care for your scarf and keep it as beautiful as the day you first wore it.

1. Always Check the Fibre Content

Artyarn is a blend of fibres — wool, silk, mohair, and plant fibres are all common. Each fibre has slightly different care requirements, but the golden rule for all of them is the same: gentle is always best.

2. Hand Wash Only

Machine washing is the fastest way to felt or damage natural fibres. Always hand wash your artyarn scarf in cool or lukewarm water with a gentle wool wash or mild soap. Submerge the scarf, gently squeeze (never wring or twist), and rinse thoroughly in water of the same temperature to avoid shocking the fibres.

3. Dry Flat

Never hang a wet artyarn scarf — the weight of the water will stretch it out of shape. Instead, gently press out excess water with a clean towel, then lay the scarf flat on a dry towel in its natural shape. Allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

4. Store with Care

When not in use, fold your scarf loosely and store it in a breathable cotton bag or a drawer. Avoid hanging for long periods, which can distort the shape. Keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.

5. Handle Fringing Gently

The fringing on our scarves is part of what makes them so beautiful — and it deserves special attention. Avoid pulling or tugging at the fringe. If it becomes tangled, gently separate the strands with your fingers rather than a comb.

6. Dealing with Pilling

Some pilling is natural with wool and mohair fibres, especially in areas of friction. Use a fabric shaver or a soft-bristled lint brush to gently remove pills. This is completely normal and doesn’t affect the quality or longevity of the scarf.

7. Refresh Between Washes

You don’t need to wash your scarf after every wear. Air it out between uses by hanging it in a well-ventilated space for a few hours. A light steam from a garment steamer can also refresh the fibres and release any creases without washing.
